We recently completed an independent third-party assessment for the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Level 2. Earning this certification opens the door for us to bring cost-saving building automation systems (BAS) to the U.S. Department of War – and other agencies that adopt CMMC.
The DoW and its contractors are facing complex and frequent cyber-attacks. CMMC is a way to assess the information safeguarding requirements for federal contract information (FCI) and controlled unclassified information (CUI). With this certification, contractors demonstrate that they are complying with the DoW’s current guidelines for maintaining the security of these types of unclassified information.

CMMC Level 2 is a DoW cybersecurity framework administered by the department’s chief information officer (CIO). The certification covers security standards developed and managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
The job of NIST is to develop frameworks for risk management and security controls. These drive cybersecurity solutions at the highest levels. To earn CMMC Level 2 certification, organizations must demonstrate compliance with NIST 800-171 security controls.
A Significant Effort
Earning CMMC Level 2 certification was a significant effort. Beginning in late 2024, the Albireo Energy team worked with consultants to implement the 110 security controls that comprise NIST 800-171. The process also required the Albireo Energy team to document 330 pieces of evidence that were reviewed and sometimes challenged by the third-party assessors.
The Albireo Energy Alabama division was the first to earn CMMC, followed by the District of Columbia and San Diego divisions. Most recently, our Albireo Energy corporate level has also earned the certification. This allows us to work for DoW facilities within the U.S. and globally.
